Labour’s no time for putting your feet up!

Labour’s called labour for good reason – it’s hard work. It's not the time to be putting your feet up! There’s a wealth of research available now supporting the use of more upright (standing, squatting, kneeling) or all fours positions as the most effective for labour and birth – quicker labours, fewer interventions, safer births, happier mums and babies. Upright positions allow the uterus to work with gravity so it works more effectively, it allows mum to breath deeper, it allows her to move more freely to stay more comfortable, flooding her uterus with oxygen, whilst gravity also helps the baby descend, and also being more upright means you're not sitting on the back of your pelvis (the sacrum) which needs to to open back as baby is birthed. So leave the ‘putting your feet up’ until after the baby arrives and get off your back for birth!!
